Talks

New Frontiers Across the National Curriculum in Astronomy Education

Dr Francisco Diego, President of the AAE

The talk includes practical ideas to illustrate complicated concepts about our place in the Universe, following the requirements of the National Curriculum.  In addition, astronomy is presented as a cultural link between a variety of subjects, all the way from mythology and religion to art and modern science.

The Planetarium: A Unique Teaching Environment

Dr Gill Russell, British Association of Planetaria

The realistic representation of the sky and its movements is essential to explain our position and perspective in the vast Universe.

Life in the Universe

Dr Ian Crawford, Birkbeck College London

The talk describes the search for life on other planets and how we might detect intelligent life.

WORKSHOP

Astrophysics in the Sixth Form

Easy enough for the beginner, tough enough for the accomplished teacher, the workshop will cover the Astronomy and Cosmology found in the new AS/A2 Modular A-level courses. It will emphasise the daytime laboratory work that is possible and introduce worksheets for the less immediately accessible topics. There will be a display of resources and a chance to try out some of the CD-ROMs available.

AAE EXHIBITION STAND

The AAE will have a stand with publications, membership forms, packs and some simple astronomical instruments and props for teaching astronomy.

January 2003 ASE Meeting in Birmingham

LECTURE

Astronomy in the Primary Classroom

Dr Francisco Diego, President of the AAE

Astronomy and Space are exciting areas of science with particular appeal to primary school children.  This session will focus on how the appeal of astronomy and space can be maximised in the classroom.

DEMONSTRATION

Experience the Night Sky at your School

Continuous demonstrations of a Starlab Inflatable Planetarium that you could hire by the day for your school.

LECTURE

Astronomy, National Curriculum and Modern Culture

Dr Francisco Diego, President of the AAE

This lecture describes the presence of Astronomy and Space Sciences in the National Curriculum and GCSE syllabus. Then, it deals with the relevance of astronomy along human history and the amazing links that the discovery of the Universe has, not only to other natural sciences like chemistry and biology, but also to art, philosophy and religion. Finally, the lecture concentrates in the need of enhancing those links at all levels of education, with the direct and indirect benefits from a higher content of Astronomy in our modern culture.

WORKSHOPS

Practical Astronomy in the Classroom and Playground

This workshop will be given by members of the Association for Astronomy Education, who will use simple models and easily available astronomical instruments to demonstrate ways to explain our position in time and space within the Universe. There will be practical ideas to be implemented in the classroom and also in the playground and open spaces, always with special attention to the requirements of all the key stages in the National Curriculum and the GCSE syllabus.
